Designer Profile: Jane Round

Jane Round's collection is inspired by John Singer Sargent paintings and other decorative art of the American Renaissance period. She will show a collection of “creative separates, dresses, jackets, coats, and accessories.” The 23-year-old designer says this collection is a bit more understated, wearable and city friendly. “My aesthetic changed when I moved here [to New York],” Jane says. Bringing that creative perspective to sportswear has been a great way for her to grow her collections, she tells us.

Designer Profile: Mitchell

This spring marks 17-year-old-high school senior Mitchell Henderson’s third season showing at Omaha Fashion Week. Mitchell’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection is inspired by the movie Blade Runner and based on America’s failing infrastructure.

“It’s something that’s been prevalent in America’s politics and I feel like it’s really relevant to portray that in a collection right now,” Mitchell told us.

2010: The Year Omaha Fashion Week Moved Under the Bridge

The temperature was frigid and the rain was coming, but the Omaha Fashion Week crew subscribes to the show biz adage, the show must go on. And so 2010 is often referred to as the year it rained, or the year under the bridge…lovingly, might I add. Although I’m not sure the 45 little girls designer Yolanda Diaz brought along or those poor swimsuit models are the ones referring to this year as their favorite. Producer Nick Hudson, recalls the temperature to have been 35 degrees and even seeing a bit of snow! But even so, 19 designers marched hundreds of models down the 276-foot runway on Saturday September 18th in the finale of Omaha Fashion Week. Designer Highlight: radioactive heart by jennie mason.

2009: The Year Omaha Fashion Week Grew

After its glamorous debut in 2008, Omaha Fashion Week returned in 2009 promising a bigger and better experience. The 2nd year brought together 25 designers (double the previous year), 40 hair stylists and makeup artists, 200 models and volunteers, and a crowd of over 3000!  Designer Juantiesha Christian has fond memories of her experience that first year, “My first model walked on the runway and I just felt like I was at New York Fashion Week. I walked back to my seat and a group of people were clapping for me. I had never really experienced that before. It was so cool!”

Joslyn's Kent Bellows Mentoring Program

"Every Friday afternoon I gather up an armful or two of useful doodads and random tidbits and take my happy butt to a little glass front space at 33rd and Leavenworth. There is a brightly painted concrete planter in the front that stands out against the concrete, brick, and glass of the block and every time I pass it I think I need to make one for myself, but inevitably forget as soon as I get home. Sometimes you can hear a boxing class next door, see a few friendly strangers smoking outside of the VFW across the street, or see any number of neighborhood folks waiting at the bus stop next to the planter." 2008: The Year Omaha Fashion Week Was Born

In 2008, there were a number of fashion designers in Omaha, putting on their own small shows in various venues across town. Enter Nick Hudson and Nomad Lounge with a reputation for some of the best nightlife events Omaha had to offer. Nick, whose family has a long legacy in fashion (stemming from his grandfather buying silk parachutes and turning them into garments following WWII) saw an opportunity to bring local designers together. And so, Omaha Fashion Week was born! Plus, designer highlight: Amy Quinn
