Summer is Here and the Trends are Hot

By Ellyse Coombes of Trocadero - Looks by BCBGMAXAZRIA, Herve Leger, J.Crew, Forever 21, Kate Spade, Alice+Olivia and Chamak by Priya Kakkar.

This summer is all about being bold. It's time to step outside the box and revamp your look with these exotic prints and vibrant colors. Some of these trends can even be carried over into fall. Ladies, skin is in... snakeskin, that is! If you're not comfortable wearing a pair of snakeskin pants, like the BCBGMAXAZRIA ones pictured above, then try it on something simpler like a belt or clutch. The skin will add just the right touch to an outfit, without being over the top.

To be honest, when I first read that tribal prints were a summer trend, I was completely opposed to the idea. I told myself this is one trend I will not buy into. Now when I look in my closet, I've noticed that I've bought too much of it. I love the geometric and modern style the prints have! This print is fun to play around with, whether in the form of a romper, dress or skirt. At least one of these tribal items should find its way into your closet this summer!

The colors this summer just keep on getting brighter. Color blocking is another fun trend to test out this summer. Pair different vibrant colors together and add a fun printed scarf or bangles. By switching up colors and patterns, you can achieve so many different outfits with just a couple basic pieces. In doing so, you can achieve instant style!

Fashion Police: Best and Worst dressed of the 2011 MTV Movie Awards

By Cygne Cooper and Ellyse Coombes of TrocaderoMTV rolled out the red carpet on Sunday, June 5th for the 2011 Movie Awards.  It was a star studded event full of fashion, fun, and excitement.  As always, there were the celebrities that took our breath away with their beautiful dresses, shoes, and accessories.  Then there were the ones that made you think to yourself 'Did they even bother to look in the mirror before they left?'  It was a hard choice, but here is who we chose for best and worst dress:

Design Inspiration for Sabrina Jones

By Sabrina JonesA few months ago I was approached by a new client who loves the fashion of the 50’s. She is getting married this summer and wanted me to create a custom designed wedding dress inspired by that era. I began to research fashion trends of the time, as well as some of my favorite designers -- Balenciaga, Chanel, Jacques Fath, and Christian Dior. Those familiar with my designs are well aware of my love of corsets and my passion for historic fashion. Although my client initially pushed me to study the 50’s, I was immediately drawn to the femininity and grace of this era. The voluminous swing skirts, emphasizing tiny little waists, and the overall head-to-to glamour, which included hats, gloves, and handbags, had me hooked.

This is a sneak peek of my 50’s inspired fashion line for OFW 2011 and an inspiration piece by Dior.

OFW Fall 2011 Model Call 4

We are having a new model call for those who haven't made it to one of our past three calls.  If you have already been to one of our calls for the fall 2011 shows, do not come to this one as we've already got your paperwork on file. Thursday, June 2 5-7 p.m. Nomad Lounge, 1013 Jones St. Facebook

Here are some pointers for OFW Model Calls:

Q: What can I expect when I arrive?

A:  You will be given a short form to fill out, your measurements will be taken, you will meet our panel of industry experts who will ask you a few questions, and then you will demonstrate your walk.  At past calls, we have had approximately 200 applicants, so be prepared to wait.

Q: What should I bring?

A: Bring a pen to fill out your form and your BEST HANDWRITING. We can't emphasize the handwriting enough.  If we can't decipher your writing, we can't notify you about your selection.

Q: What kinds of models are you looking for?

A:  We often get questions about height, weight and age for models.  Our goal is to provide models that will allow our designers to bring their creative vision to life.  Therefore, models are selected based on the needs of designers.

Q: What information will I be required to provide on the form?

A:  You will provide your name, email address, phone number, mailing address and measurements (measurements will be verified by OFW volunteers).  This form will also include a preliminary commitment statement that you will need to sign, which states that you will make yourself available for fittings with your designer and that you will be available the week of August 22-27 to walk in Omaha Fashion Week, should you be selected.  Remember to write legibly – this is our only way to reach you with news about your participation in the fall show.  Also, if you are under 19 please have a parent or guardian with you to sign the commitment statement on your behalf.

Q: What should I wear?

A: The panel of industry experts will want to see your bodyline, how you move and your face.  For ladies, we recommend something form-fitting, such as jeggings/leggings with a simple top and high-heels.  For gentlemen, we recommend jeans and t-shirts.  As for make-up, hair and accessories, keep it simple…again, the panel is looking for natural beauty.

Q: What happens if I am selected?

A:  If selected, you will be required to sign a release to walk in Omaha Fashion Week (if under 19, you will need to have a parent/guardian sign for you).  You will also be expected to meet with your designer as needed for fittings and do your part to help bring their creativity to life on the runway.  The designer is the leader of his/her creative team, which includes a set of models, make-up artists and hairstylists.  Participation in OFW is an exciting opportunity to work as a team and all members of the team are expected to do their part to deliver upon the creative vision of the designer.

Q: When will I know if I am selected?

A: You will be notified via email in the second week of June if you are selected.  This will be our only method of communication about the selection process, so please make sure you check the email you included on your model call form for notification.  If you are unsure about whether or not notifications have been sent out, check the Omaha Fashion Week facebook page – we will post a status update when notifications go out.

Q: What if I have other questions?

A: Post a question in the comment box below this entry and we’ll do our best to get you an answer quickly.  Thanks!
