Fashion Institute Midwest Announces OFW Finale Line Up

The Fashion Institute Midwest has announced the lineup for the upcoming Finale of Omaha Fashion Week on Saturday, Aug. 23 under the tents in the Capitol District. Selection Panel Chairmen Rick Carey and David Scott said, “We were so impressed with the emerging talent. It is very exciting to see this quality of design which continues to get better year after year.  This will be the best Omaha Fashion Week yet!"

Since April, designers have been working with members of the Fashion Institute Selection Panel during regular group meetings and workshops. They’ve discussed target markets, fabric sourcing, runway styling and even post-event sales strategy, all in an effort to help the designers make the most of their opportunity at Omaha Fashion Week.

The mentoring program, coordinated by the Fashion Institute Midwest, culminated in the OFW Rack Check held last Saturday, where collections were reviewed and decisions were made about who has what it takes to be in the Finale.

The Scoop on Kiddos at August 2014 OFW

Hi Parents! OFW Producer, Brook Hudson, here. We've received many calls and questions about how kids ages 11 and under can be involved in OFW this season. We LOVE having kids involved because they represent the future of fashion in our community. Participating in OFW programming can build confidence, expand critical thinking skills and sharpen your child's ability to pay attention and work as a member of a team. We just completed our first round of Omaha Fashion Camp last Friday, and I was truly amazed at how campers were using both sides of their brilliant brains to create their very own garments at camp. They had to tap into creative, analytical, structural and social aspects of their intellects, and the results were nothing short of amazing when they unveiled their final projects to parents on Friday. Check out this story from Action 3 News to see what campers were up to last week: http://www.jrn.com/kmtv/news/up-front-at-4/Omaha-Fashion-Camp-Offers-Youth-a-Styled-Summer--262173421.html

Whether your child is a budding designer, model, photographer, writer or stylist...there are many opportunities to explore the skills involved in being successful in all aspects of the fashion industry:

Kids' Model Call & Workshop At this workshop, kids spend an evening learning the skills to have a successful audition as a model...and then they put those skills to use in an actual Model Call for OFW. Parents learn techniques to better prepare their child for a positive experience on the runway. Next one will be held in early 2015. This program is NOT scheduled for summer 2014 due to high demand and a limited number of placements for child models available.

Omaha Fashion Camp Your child will learn about all aspects of the fashion industry, from sketching, photography and modeling, to creating his or her very own garment or accessory. Camp will culminate in a runway show for parents at the end of the week! We have sessions for ages 5-10 and 11-16 available. Next session is July 7-11. Cost: $199. A few spots are still available for camp! Learn more and sign up at www.omahafashionweek.com/camp.

Specially-Priced Child's Ticket for the Bridal & Children's Wear Showcase Create a special evening out with your child at our Bridal & Children's Wear Showcase on August 18. A specially-priced ticket for children ages 11 and under is available for families who want to take their budding fashion fans out for a fun evening alongside the runway. These tickets are $20 each and will allow you to sit in the 3rd or 4th row. Many families plan birthday parties and special outings around OFW with their children, and now we are making it more affordable than ever for families to continue this tradition. We encourage anyone with a child who is interested in fashion to take this opportunity to see a professionally produced fashion show, right here in Omaha. Pick up your tickets here: https://omahafashionweek.ticketleap.com/bridalchildrens/dates/Aug-18-2014_at_0600PM

Pre-Teen Modeling Classes at Develop Model Management OFW has a wonderful relationship with the premier modeling and placement agency in our region: Develop Model Management. Develop is not only a sponsor of OFW, but Develop Founder Alyssa Dilts also serves as our casting director. When I was about 11 years old, my parents sent me to classes similar to what Alyssa offers pre-teens today at her agency. Those classes changed the course of my life...setting me up with the confidence and poise to compete successfully in pageants (I became Miss Nebraska and competed in Miss America in 2004, winning over $50,000 in college scholarships!!), land amazing jobs in marketing and PR with businesses ranging from banking and financial services to non-profits and education, and now in my role as Producer of OFW where I lead an army of 1,000+ volunteers to pull off amazing fashion shows twice a year. I would not be where I am today without the Finishing School education I received at a modeling agency as a pre-teen and cannot overstate the value of this type of education for kids. If you want to encourage your child in his or her pursuits within fashion, or are simply looking for an opportunity to build confidence and poise...go talk to Alyssa! She has classes for both Pre-Teens and Teens. My parents would agree that this was one of the best investments they made in raising me...and I look forward to sending my little girl (Charlotte Rose is due to arrive Oct. 2!!) to Alyssa when she is old enough! Check out Develop Model Management at www.develop-models.com

Thank you all for your continued support of our fashion community. I look forward to seeing you and your kiddos soon at some of our childrens' activities throughout the year!!

xo,

Brook Hudson OFW Producer

Important Information for Fashion Campers!

Hello Future Fashionistas and parents!  We are excited to begin our first-ever Omaha Fashion Camp tomorrow morning!  Please read the following information to help you be prepared and have a positive camp experience. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email Camp Director, Alyssa Dilts at alyssa@develop-models.com.

What to expect:

CAMP LOCATION HAS CHANGED!  Camp will be at Develop Model Management on 1307 Leavenworth Street in Downtown Omaha.  This is right on the corner of 13th & Leavenworth.  There is ample parking on the south side of the building.  Look for the Creighton Clinic signs and use the south entrance.  You'll walk down a hallway...follow the Develop Model Management signage.

ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS must complete the Omaha Fashion Camp Liability Waiver Form: http://www.123contactform.com/form-987084/Omaha-Fashion-Camp-Liability-Waiver

FIRST DAY STARTS AT 8 a.m.  We will be taking care of any registration details at that time.  On all other days, we would like to get started right at 8 a.m., so please don't be late!  When you arrive each day, please check in with a camp counselor.  Parents will also need to come in at the pick up time to check out children.

IF CARPOOLING, complete this form: http://www.123contactform.com/form-987096/Omaha-Fashion-Camp-Carpool-Form

Your child will be given an itinerary the first day of camp that will outline what each day will focus on. Camp sessions are small and personalized. There will only be approximately 15 campers in each session, so your child will receive a lot of one-on-one help from the experts.

Make sure your child is wearing comfortable clothes and shoes - we have partnered with the Goodwill Reserve Store and will have a walking fieldtrip planned to pick out garments that we will repurpose during a camp project.  The store is only about two blocks from camp.

Please be sure to feed your child before he/she arrives at camp.  We will have water available, but no food, as we don't want to risk soiling garments that will be in production.

We look forward to meeting the 5-10 year olds tomorrow at 8 a.m. and the 11-16 year olds tomorrow at 1 p.m.  Have a good night!

Brook Hudson OFW Producer

This upcoming August lineup includes 15 new designer faces and collections on the OFW runway, 11 out-of-state designers and 6 high school students.

“It is wonderful to see 15 new designers involved in Omaha Fashion Week. As OFW expands we are engaging new young, student talent as well as introducing out-of-town designer markets to Omaha’s collaborative community and fashion-industry eco-system,” said OFW Producer Brook Hudson. “It’s so exciting to see how far we’ve come as a fashion community in the seven years since OFW began.”

Designer Interview Highlights:

Beauty & Style Event $2,000 Grand Prize Package

We are looking for 8 teams of hair stylists and make up artists who want to compete for a $2,000 prize package at the Beauty & Style event at Omaha Fashion Week on Sunday, March 9. The package includes $1,000 cash prize and an exclusive VIP table at the August 2014 Finale valued at $1,000. All applications are due by Feb. 5.

If you want to enter this contest, complete this form: Application Form

We've gotten lots of great questions about how we are running the competition…here they are + answers:

How does the Beauty and Style competition work? Style teams will draw a theme based on a specific trend from a bowl on March 7 during the Designer Show Case I (tickets will be provided to contest participants).  They'll have 48 hours to develop & execute their concept based on their trend. Sky is the limit on creativity!

What are the themes? The themes will be based on current trends but you’ll have to find out on March 7!

How many people can be on a team? We recommend four – a team leader, hair stylist, make up artist + stylist to put it all together.

How many models can be in each collection? There will be 8 looks in each collection.

What will the models will be wearing? (Leggings & tank top? Button down & dress slacks?) Good question. It’s up to your team! We want this to be a visual explosion! Bring your theme to life however you want!

Will the designers be choosing their own models or are they assigned? Models will be assigned by Develop Model Management on Friday, March 7.

Can style teams choose number of male and female models? Teams do not get to pick their models.

What are the judging categories and who will be doing the judging? The OFW Selection panel will judge teams on creativity and visual impact.

Styling teams will be announced on Feb. 7!

Email us at info@omahafashionweek.com if you have other questions to add to this list.  Thanks!!

OFW Announces Fresh Designer Line Up and New Venue for March 2014 Season

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OFW Announces Fresh Designer Line Up and New Venue for March 2014 Season

Omaha, Neb. October 28, 2013 – Omaha Fashion Week organizers announced the designers who have been selected to show Fall/Winter 2014 collections during the next season of OFW March 4-9 in 2014. The lineup of 15 designers includes six newcomers, two high school students and all are from Nebraska or Iowa. Organizers have also selected a new venue for the fashion shows.

“This was a very entrepreneurial group of applicants.  Several are looking at manufacturing and one has a storefront,” said OFW Producer Brook Hudson. “It’s so exciting to see how far we’ve come as a fashion community in the seven years since OFW began.”  Highlights from interviews:

  1. Hollie Hanash, the designer behind the children’s wear label, Ruffled Runway, is rolling out a line of avant garde pieces for adults.
  2. Wallflower, a label by OFW newcomers Bryan Frost and Erica Cardenas, has a storefront that will be opening on Nov. 2 at 1402 South 13th Street.
  3. Children’s wear designer Aubrey Sookram of MarkoosModernDesign is getting ready to sell 500 dresses on Zullily.com.  She made all 500 dresses herself in her basement studio.

The applicant pool included 30 designers who were narrowed down to the 15 who were selected. Designers applied and pitched their ideas to a panel of industry experts brought together by the Fashion Institute Midwest last week. The experts scored each designer and provided feedback that OFW organizers used to make final selections.

OFW also has a new venue.  The Omar Bakery Building, located at 4383 Nicholas Street, will be the new home of OFW next spring.  “The space is beautiful with exposed brick walls, polished concrete floors and great facilities.  There is plenty of room for expansion,” Hudson said. The 16,000 square-foot event space at the Omar is under construction and will be open for events starting in December.  “We feel very fortunate to be one of the first to book the space.”

A complete schedule of events for Mar. 4-9 will be announced in late November, with tickets going on sale Jan. 15, 2014. Below is a list of designer bios:

High Schoolers

Elda Doamekpo is a high school student with a brand called Élle Inspired.  Her evening wear collection is inspired 1940’s Dior.  Elda is also a runway newcomer.

Hannah Olson is an 18-year-old designer who loves to make custom garments for all sizes under her label, Hannah Caroline. She is dedicated to improving the selection of plus-sized apparel and helping women feel beautiful in their own skin.

Stacey Sipp is a multi-media artist and who specializes in out-of-the-ordinary pieces and specialty dresses for the tweens. She hopes her collection can be a vehicle for young girls to express themselves instead of blending into the crowd.
