In partnership with OutNebraska, a custom-designed graphic tee was created to represent support and growth for the LGBTQ+ community. OutNebraska makes an impact by advocating, celebrating, and educating to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ people. Each aspect of this graphic design draws from culturally significant symbols that celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Explore the detailed meanings behind the design during Pride Month.

Hyacinthus was a beautiful young prince in Greek mythology who was the lover of Apollo and admired by Zephyr, the god of the west wind. There are several versions of the myth, however in each version Hyacinthus was killed by a discus - whether by accident after it was thrown by Apollo, or on purpose by Zephyr out of jealousy. Distraught by his death, Apollo forbade Hades to claim his soul and instead turned him into the flower of the same name.

The original pride flag designed by Gilbert Baker included a turquoise stripe, which represents magic and art. This is fitting for the hyacinth flower, as Apollo is very connected to the arts. Therefore, the hyacinth flower in this design is a symbol both of romance between men and of the connection between the LGBTQ+ community and the arts.

Later, the turquoise and indigo stripes converged into the single blue stripe. The more recent “Progress” design includes a light blue chevron stripe along with white and light pink, which represent the inclusion of trans people.
