Omaha Fashion Week Avant Garde Recap

Last night's runway collection featured Spring/Summer 2015 designs from some of our favorite Avant Garde designers. The show kicked off with a special presentation from Louis Alvarez and his team of stylists. They featured large, back combed styles that made an impression on the audience. Alvarez and his team brought in three members of the Joffery Ballet to dance down the runway and showcase the styles.

The first designer down the runway was Angela Balderston for Get Plastered! Angela is a FIM grant recipient. Her collection was inspired by tribes of Africa and featured clothing made of plaster and large African-style headpieces. The line had extreme details, animal-like clothing and body paint that wowed the audience.

Kristen Van Hessche's Japanese-inspired line tells the story of a fox that changes into a woman to seduce a man. Each kimono was hand painted by Van Hessche to bring the story to life. Her models wore fox-like masks and each silk kimono was intricately detailed.

Claire Landolt had a collection inspired by the duality of the vulture. Vultures, to Landolt, are both beautiful and grotesque and she tried to feature that duality in her line. Each look had a cast iron claw or chicken leg to add to the bird-like feel to her line. We saw tons of texture with Landolt's line as well as fringe, leather and crocheting.

The independent late night showing of Jenny Pool's collection, "La Foret Des Reves," combined fashion and live performance to unfold the story of a girl lost in the forest. The line featured Victorian inspired elements and moveable cream fabrics that added to the theatricality of the line.

Summer 2014 Tips and Trends feat. Gramercy

Last week, Esoteric Velve'ts Meghann Schense had the opportunity to put together a few looks from the amazing clothes at Gramercy, a women's RTW boutique located in Countryside Village, for a group of young professionals. She had so much fun styling their clothes and answering questions from young professionals about how to best dress for work, travel, weddings or errands. Here are some of the outfits, tips, tricks and Summer 2014 trends she loved:

426AumdaK0qrJ-IbKoTIX2KMkQgxMSWCPHESCuc5f48This first outfit is great for travel. Maxi dresses are super comfortable and lightweight which makes them easy to wear and easy to pack. You could also layer a cardigan over if a plane ride or car gets too chilly. The accessories I found were perfect for a day in the sun, the blue hat is actually packable and folds down but still retains it’s shape. I decided to keep it simple with a statement necklace for jewelry. Pair this with some flip flops and you’re good to go.

DSdm7vPgkQ_QOs1i1fIBSl20GddQc4pJ2S7LMR3l5jE

I thought this outfit would be perfect for shopping, brunch or a girls night out. The white skinny jeans have a forgiving 360 degree stretch as well as a “butt lift” in the back so it’s flattering on every figure. The outfit pairs great with the Chinese newsprint flats Gramercy has, as well as the brown clutch.

daIw5EX3c3Ale5p7zMowUdvsH8ASAo2uV6w-doEmnIU

This outfit is also perfect for day to day activities, especially if it’s a little warmer. The shorts have an elastic waistband and the grey silk top is a very breathable fabric for summertime. I paired this look with one of Gramercy’s fun printed scarves. You could wear it as an infinity scarf, tie it like a regular scarf, throw it around your shoulders if you get chilly or even use it as a beach cover up.

8VQED4PAWoz3ebStaVCz63vQEN-i7vuTZLB827ieTpg

For a more modest look I found this wonderful printed kaftan and belted it around the waist with a matching coral belt. I paired this with the same white skinny jeans and dressed the look up with a big statement necklace.

I loved this laid back look for running around with kids or running errands. The army green pants are some of Gramercy’s best sellers, the drawstring front is popping up here and there for summer and they are super comfortable. I paired this with a graphic tank with a slightly open back, rose gold jewelry and this fun light pink bag that will hold anything and everything. Graphics, open banks and gold hues are huge for summer so this outfit is perfectly on trend.

This dress is perfect for a summer wedding, and I know there are going to be plenty of those this season. I love the bright neon color, a huge trend, and the silhouette is very flattering on most figures. I added a pair of fabulous earrings and a long statement necklace, some of our favorites from Gramercy’s top-notch jewelry. They have jewelry designers from both India and London that are huge sellers with great statement pieces like the ones pictured above. The great thing about long necklaces that hit at a natural waist is that they are going to draw eyes downwards and give the illusion of an elongated torso. This will make anyone look and feel slimmer.

I also always think it’s best to “edit yourself” before you leave the house when it comes to accessories. This often means removing one or two pieces. There are three types of big accessories: an arm party of bangles and chunky bracelets, statement earrings or a statement necklace. I think it’s probably not a great idea to do all three, but there are always exceptions to every rule. That’s why editing yourself is so important.

Gramercy also has some wonderful work-to-night-out looks like the one pictured above. For a chilly office, I paired the outfit with this great jacket and infinity scarf and a pair of simple black kitten heels. I also, once again, added some on-trend rose gold jewelry. For a night out all you need to do is add a sassier pair of heels, remove the jacket and scarf and add a statement necklace. For a more corporate look, Gramercy also offers a variety of wonderful black dresses and neoprene patterned dresses from one of their best selling brands, Clover Canyon.  Neoprene is great fabric because it really retains it’s shape so it’s a purchase that will last a long time.

Let us know if you love any of these looks and be sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter, and like our page on Facebook!

The Scoop on Kiddos at August 2014 OFW

Hi Parents! OFW Producer, Brook Hudson, here. We've received many calls and questions about how kids ages 11 and under can be involved in OFW this season. We LOVE having kids involved because they represent the future of fashion in our community. Participating in OFW programming can build confidence, expand critical thinking skills and sharpen your child's ability to pay attention and work as a member of a team. We just completed our first round of Omaha Fashion Camp last Friday, and I was truly amazed at how campers were using both sides of their brilliant brains to create their very own garments at camp. They had to tap into creative, analytical, structural and social aspects of their intellects, and the results were nothing short of amazing when they unveiled their final projects to parents on Friday. Check out this story from Action 3 News to see what campers were up to last week: http://www.jrn.com/kmtv/news/up-front-at-4/Omaha-Fashion-Camp-Offers-Youth-a-Styled-Summer--262173421.html

Whether your child is a budding designer, model, photographer, writer or stylist...there are many opportunities to explore the skills involved in being successful in all aspects of the fashion industry:

Kids' Model Call & Workshop At this workshop, kids spend an evening learning the skills to have a successful audition as a model...and then they put those skills to use in an actual Model Call for OFW. Parents learn techniques to better prepare their child for a positive experience on the runway. Next one will be held in early 2015. This program is NOT scheduled for summer 2014 due to high demand and a limited number of placements for child models available.

Omaha Fashion Camp Your child will learn about all aspects of the fashion industry, from sketching, photography and modeling, to creating his or her very own garment or accessory. Camp will culminate in a runway show for parents at the end of the week! We have sessions for ages 5-10 and 11-16 available. Next session is July 7-11. Cost: $199. A few spots are still available for camp! Learn more and sign up at www.omahafashionweek.com/camp.

Specially-Priced Child's Ticket for the Bridal & Children's Wear Showcase Create a special evening out with your child at our Bridal & Children's Wear Showcase on August 18. A specially-priced ticket for children ages 11 and under is available for families who want to take their budding fashion fans out for a fun evening alongside the runway. These tickets are $20 each and will allow you to sit in the 3rd or 4th row. Many families plan birthday parties and special outings around OFW with their children, and now we are making it more affordable than ever for families to continue this tradition. We encourage anyone with a child who is interested in fashion to take this opportunity to see a professionally produced fashion show, right here in Omaha. Pick up your tickets here: https://omahafashionweek.ticketleap.com/bridalchildrens/dates/Aug-18-2014_at_0600PM

Pre-Teen Modeling Classes at Develop Model Management OFW has a wonderful relationship with the premier modeling and placement agency in our region: Develop Model Management. Develop is not only a sponsor of OFW, but Develop Founder Alyssa Dilts also serves as our casting director. When I was about 11 years old, my parents sent me to classes similar to what Alyssa offers pre-teens today at her agency. Those classes changed the course of my life...setting me up with the confidence and poise to compete successfully in pageants (I became Miss Nebraska and competed in Miss America in 2004, winning over $50,000 in college scholarships!!), land amazing jobs in marketing and PR with businesses ranging from banking and financial services to non-profits and education, and now in my role as Producer of OFW where I lead an army of 1,000+ volunteers to pull off amazing fashion shows twice a year. I would not be where I am today without the Finishing School education I received at a modeling agency as a pre-teen and cannot overstate the value of this type of education for kids. If you want to encourage your child in his or her pursuits within fashion, or are simply looking for an opportunity to build confidence and poise...go talk to Alyssa! She has classes for both Pre-Teens and Teens. My parents would agree that this was one of the best investments they made in raising me...and I look forward to sending my little girl (Charlotte Rose is due to arrive Oct. 2!!) to Alyssa when she is old enough! Check out Develop Model Management at www.develop-models.com

Thank you all for your continued support of our fashion community. I look forward to seeing you and your kiddos soon at some of our childrens' activities throughout the year!!

Brook Hudson OFW Producer

Important Information for Fashion Campers!

Hello Future Fashionistas and parents!  We are excited to begin our first-ever Omaha Fashion Camp tomorrow morning!  Please read the following information to help you be prepared and have a positive camp experience. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email Camp Director, Alyssa Dilts at alyssa@develop-models.com.

What to expect:

CAMP LOCATION HAS CHANGED!  Camp will be at Develop Model Management on 1307 Leavenworth Street in Downtown Omaha.  This is right on the corner of 13th & Leavenworth.  There is ample parking on the south side of the building.  Look for the Creighton Clinic signs and use the south entrance.  You'll walk down a hallway...follow the Develop Model Management signage.

ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS must complete the Omaha Fashion Camp Liability Waiver Form: http://www.123contactform.com/form-987084/Omaha-Fashion-Camp-Liability-Waiver

FIRST DAY STARTS AT 8 a.m.  We will be taking care of any registration details at that time.  On all other days, we would like to get started right at 8 a.m., so please don't be late!  When you arrive each day, please check in with a camp counselor.  Parents will also need to come in at the pick up time to check out children.

IF CARPOOLING, complete this form: http://www.123contactform.com/form-987096/Omaha-Fashion-Camp-Carpool-Form

Your child will be given an itinerary the first day of camp that will outline what each day will focus on. Camp sessions are small and personalized. There will only be approximately 15 campers in each session, so your child will receive a lot of one-on-one help from the experts.

Make sure your child is wearing comfortable clothes and shoes - we have partnered with the Goodwill Reserve Store and will have a walking fieldtrip planned to pick out garments that we will repurpose during a camp project.  The store is only about two blocks from camp.

Please be sure to feed your child before he/she arrives at camp.  We will have water available, but no food, as we don't want to risk soiling garments that will be in production.

We look forward to meeting the 5-10 year olds tomorrow at 8 a.m. and the 11-16 year olds tomorrow at 1 p.m.  Have a good night!

This upcoming August lineup includes 15 new designer faces and collections on the OFW runway, 11 out-of-state designers and 6 high school students.

“It is wonderful to see 15 new designers involved in Omaha Fashion Week. As OFW expands we are engaging new young, student talent as well as introducing out-of-town designer markets to Omaha’s collaborative community and fashion-industry eco-system,” said OFW Producer Brook Hudson. “It’s so exciting to see how far we’ve come as a fashion community in the seven years since OFW began.”

We are so proud of our very own Kylie Bollwitt for uniting community talents to benefit the Team Jack Foundation through the Roots Fashion Show, a locally produced event geared to provide the smaller communities of Nebraska a night out of fashion, food, music and entertainment.  Event will be held in O’Neill, NE on May 10th, 2014, cocktails start at 7p and showtime is 8p.

“We want to highlight showstoppers who have emerged from our midst, all the while creating awareness and raising funds for a foundation that is near and dear to every Nebraskan's heart, Team Jack.”

All entertainment, showcases, volunteers, sponsors and talent derives from Nebraska. This show will bring fellow alumni of the area home to show off their talents that have put Nebraska on the map.

“The most beneficial quality of The Roots Fashion Show is that we have the opportunity to give a portion of our show proceeds to the Team Jack Foundation, aiding them in finding a cure for pediatric brain cancer.”

The night will start off with cocktail hour and heavy horderves, red carpet photos, Team Jack photobooth opportunities, local vendor booths to shop and the chance to mix and mingle socially with all guests before the show starts. The fashion show will feature three showcases.  The first showcase is from 318 On The Avenue, a boutique from Norfolk, NE. Next, CME by Chantele Marie an O’Neill, NE fashion designer debuting her first collection out of Chicago at the Roots Fashion Show and our finale will be from Nebraska native designer with a line from L.A., Jennifer Hausman with her all American made denim label, JHaus.

Entertainment for the event will feature: Rehme Sutton, Brandi Walters, Rachel Price and Carson Belik.

A silent auction will be held throughout the event; proceeds go to The Team Jack Foundation.

You can purchase tickets at the KBRX Radio Station studios in O’Neill, NE at 251 North Jefferson Street or online here!
