In partnership with OutNebraska, a custom-designed graphic tee was created to represent support and growth for the LGBTQ+ community. OutNebraska believes in a Nebraska that is free of judgement and filled with love. Each aspect of this graphic design draws from culturally significant symbols that celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Explore the detailed meanings behind the design as we approach Pride Month.
Lilies are used to symbolize love between women in multiple cultures. Artist Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings have been thought to have a double meaning, and her paintings of lilies have been referred to as a depiction of female genitalia, and thus have been considered an erotic lesbian symbol.
In Japan, the word “yuri” - a term used to define media that depicts lesbian romance - translates to “lilies” in English, and lilies are often used to symbolize romance between two women.
As for the color, the yellow stripe in the Pride flag is symbolic of sunlight. We aim for this shirt to spread positivity and shed light on the LGBTQ+ community in Omaha.
