In partnership with OutNebraska, a custom-designed graphic tee was created to represent support and growth for the LGBTQ+ community. OutNebraska helps organizations and individuals embrace LGBTQ+ people and ensure a welcoming and thriving environment for everyone. Each aspect of this graphic design draws from culturally significant symbols that celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Explore the detailed meanings behind the design as we approach Pride Month.

The word “lavender” has historically been used as a negative descriptor for queer people or characteristics, but has been reclaimed by the LGBTQ+ community.

In the 1920s, “lavender boys” was a term used for gay men, and any man with a characteristic deemed not masculine enough would be accused of having “a streak of lavender.” The Lavender Scare was a 1950s witch hunt for homosexual federal employees. Lesbians wanting to be included in the women’s movement in the 1960s were labeled “the Lavender Menace” and thought to be delegitimizing the movement.

In 1970, lesbian feminist activists including Rita Mae Brown wore T-Shirts that said “Lavender Menace” to a women’s event, and they were supported and welcomed by the crowd. In 1971, lesbian rights became part of the platform as a “legitimate concern of feminism.”

The purple or violet stripe represents spirit, which is well-aligned with the history of lavender as a once-negative symbol reclaimed by LGBTQ+ people and turned into something beautiful. Some versions of the rainbow flag also include a lavender stripe in reference to this history.
