Violets are a direct reference to the Greek poet Sappho, who lived on the island of Lesbos and often referenced violets in her poems, which created the association between the flower and love between women.

In 1926, scandal was incited by the play The Captive when one female character sent violets to another female character. The theme of lesbianism in this play led to calls for censorship, and the production was shut down in 1927. Violet sales also plummeted as a result of the association. At the Paris showing, however, some women wore violets on their lapels to show support.

The name Violet has been used symbolically in multiple works, such as Tennessee Williams’s play Suddenly Last Summer, and the lesbian cult classic film Bound.

The original rainbow Pride flag included an indigo stripe representing serenity. The indigo and turquoise stripes were later converged into royal blue.
