In partnership with OutNebraska, a custom-designed graphic tee was created to represent support and growth for the LGBTQ+ community. OutNebraska grows connections within the community through local events and engagement. Each aspect of this graphic design draws from culturally significant symbols that celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Explore the detailed meanings behind the design as we approach Pride Month.
The gladiolus flower is a reference to Morrissey, singer of The Smiths, who would carry gladioli flowers to hand out at gigs or wear in his back pocket. The Smiths, and Morrissey in particular, cultivated an image of sexual ambiguity, and their music and imagery reflected a desire to challenge established gender and sexuality norms.
When asked about the meaning of the gladioli, Morrissey said, “Flowers are simply innocent and beautiful and have never caused strife for anyone.”
This connects well to the meaning of the orange stripe in the rainbow flag, which symbolizes healing.
