Miranda Hanson is an emerging designer, showing her first evening wear collection at Omaha Fashion Week this August! Read on to learn more about the nature inspired collection she has planned.
How did you get into fashion? Tell me a little about your background.
I learned how to sew at the age of eight when I found DIY videos on YouTube. My grandmother gave me a sewing machine and I taught myself pretty much everything I know now. When I was about 12, I started to really enjoy fashion and make pieces of my own. I had a small business at a local grocery store selling tutus and dresses for little girls. As I got older, I began to design clothes for myself and friends. My first collection was shown during Omaha Fashion Week last year at the beginning of my junior year of high school.
Describe your brand and the point of view you wish to convey. What category does your brand fall under?
I design for women in my age group. My brand thus far consists of ready to wear as well as evening wear looks.
What are your personal goals or goals for your brand?
My goal for my brand is to distribute more pieces to clients. Continuing to make quality pieces that are unique and detailed is also a goal I set for myself.
Describe your favorite project or projects that you have worked on.
My collection for FW17 was one of my favorite projects I have worked on. I enjoyed creating unique pieces and using techniques I never had before. I used denim throughout the entire collection and enjoyed finding ways to give it an evening wear feel.
Where did you find inspiration for your new collection?
My main inspiration for this collection comes from the forest and nature. There is a lot of layering and detail which comes from how I view the forest. I was also inspired by haute couture designers and their techniques.
Describe the collection you are creating.
My SS18 collection is an evening wear collection inspired by the forest and nature. The collection consists of three colors: ivory, sage green, and mauve. Flowers and lace are present in the majority of looks and each look will be detailed and eye-catching. The collection will include long evening wear gowns as well as fun party dresses and separates. I am looking to use as much couture detailing as possible.
What sort of design elements can we expect from you this season? What materials, colors, shapes, or patterns will you be using?
Throughout this collection you can expect to see beading, lace appliqué, hand dyeing, ruffles, and fabric manipulation. As for fabrics, I am using satin, chiffon, tulle, and lace.
In what ways is this collection similar or different than your past work?
This collection is my first major step into evening wear. Most of my past work has been ready to wear. I have made a few couture dresses and those are some of my favorite pieces to make. The similarity to my past work stems from use of the same shapes and ideas.
