In partnership with OutNebraska, a custom-designed graphic tee was created to represent support and growth for the LGBTQ+ community. The design is full of historical and cultural significance, with colors taken from the Pride flag designs and a floral arrangement made up of colorful blooms, each with their own meanings. Explore the detailed meanings behind the design as we approach Pride Month.

The term “pansy” was coined by Christopher Looby in his book Flowers of Manhood to refer to gay or effeminate men, especially those who dress flamboyantly. Many gay bars throughout history had names such as “The Pansy Club”. There were periods in history when such bars were more accepted, such as the 1920s when gay-friendly bars in major cities were popularized. This trend was called the Pansy Craze.

Over time, pansies have earned a meaning of flamboyance and visibility. The original Pride flag designed by Gilbert Baker consisted of eight colored stripes, the first of which was hot pink and represented sexuality. The “Progress” variant of the Pride flag design incorporates light pink, white, and light blue to represent the trans community. Including hot pink and light pink into the design of the pansies was meant to signify the significance of sexuality and the trans community, and the importance of being bold enough to stand out.
