How long have you been a DJ?

Feels like 1,000 years!

How did you get into it?

Seeing Turntablism* for the first time. Loved the idea that you can take any record and manipulate it into a whole new language.

What is your personal favorite genre of music?

I think I would have to quit my job if I had one.

How does music make you feel?

Sometimes it heals. Sometimes it hurts.

What song instantly livens up a party?

Depends on the party. Every event is different. Every crowd is unpredictable.

What is the coolest set you’ve ever played?

Tokyo, Japan. Best crowds. They show the most love.

If you could play anywhere, where would it be?

Cape Town, South Africa or Sao Paulo, Brazil

Funniest moment you’ve witnessed?

People do some very interesting things on the dance floor. I don't think they are PG-enough for this interview!

What outfit makes you shine?

I recently wore a fit from RoninScar that brought the most confidence to my stage presence.

What makes OFW unmissable?

The designers. They are the ones who bring the show to the level it needs to be.

How long have you been a DJ?

5 years. I used to burn CDs for people and that turned into playlists. I would go to parties and people would ask me to play music and they would call me a DJ. I thought, “Well, if they are gonna call me a DJ, I might as well be one.”

What is your personal favorite genre of music?

Funk, hip-hip, disco. Honestly, anything but screamo.

How does music make you feel?

Music is what my feelings sound like. (And sometimes that can be all over the place.)

What song instantly livens up a party?

Lip Gloss by Lil Mama (it’s poppin)

What is the coolest set you’ve ever played?

One time I DJed at Maha…in a fork lift…hovering above a skate ramp. Coolest and most terrifying set.

If you could play anywhere, where would it be?

I would love to play at Bonnaroo. It’s my favorite music and arts festival and it’s where I fell in love with music on a new level.

What outfit makes you shine?

Thrifted T-shirt, Nike shorts, Vans.

What makes OFW unmissable?

It’s a time and space for creatives and community to come together and celebrate what has gotten us through countless hardships. Art.

How do you set the vibe for the pre-party?

The pre-party vibe is all about the rhythm. You should feel cool and exclusive for being there, because you are. I want you to be able to talk over the music but still feel the whole vibration and bounce of the room.

How long have you been a DJ?

7 years. I've been going to dance parties and raves since I was 18 and met so many DJs. They were asking me for music so much that I decided to just start playing and DJing.

What is your personal favorite genre of music?

You can't ask a DJ that! Too many to choose from. Right now, I'm really into garage rock from the 80s.

How does music make you feel?

Complete, whole, and warm.

What song instantly livens up a party?

Depends on the party. The most universal sound that everyone enjoys, no matter the occasion, is something with a funky beat or is a funky remix of an 80s or 90s or 00s song that people know but has been updated with a more current sound.

What is the coolest set you’ve ever played?

It would either have to be MAHA 2021 or CWS.

If you could play anywhere, where would it be?

A sunset or sunrise beach party in Tulum.

Funniest moment you’ve witnessed?

A father and son taking their shirts off and swinging them around to Sweet Caroline.

What outfit makes you shine?

A funky-patterned or unique A-line dress that accentuates my curves but also makes me stand out from the crowd.

What makes OFW unmissable?

Omaha needs cool events that set us apart from the Midwestern city that the rest of the nation thinks we are. OFW has definitely helped with the vibrancy! We need to make our city grow to be cool and hip.

How do you set the vibe for the pre-party?

I play music that makes you feel sexy and is upbeat and puts you in the mood for fashion. Whether you like to see it, wear it, or are a part of the show.

How long have you been a DJ?

5 Years. I got into DJing my senior year at Central High School, when they asked the students if anyone wanted to DJ for the winter formal. They held try-outs and I tried out, got the gig, and have been DJing ever since.

What is your personal favorite genre of music?

It’s a tie between Hip Hop/Rap & R&B.

How does music make you feel?

Music keeps me at peace. Whenever I’m doing something I like to have music playing around me somewhere, whether it’s in the headphones or just on the phone. I need my tunes.

What songs instantly liven up a party?

Love Sosa by Chief Keef or No Hands by Waka Flocka Flame

What is the coolest set you’ve ever played?

Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. I got to DJ for an artist by the name of Sk8. We opened up for DaBaby there and it was the craziest set I’ve had.

If you could play anywhere, where would it be?

Red Rocks Amphitheater

What outfit makes you shine?

Roland Fitz styled me for a concert I had at the Slowdown. It was an all-orange jumpsuit and a white sweater with a dope design. I loved that fit.

What makes OFW unmissable?

Definitely the whole show. From the Pre-Party, to the main show, then to the after party…there’s never a dull moment!

How do you set the vibe for shows?

I set the vibe by playing the songs for the models walking on the runway. There’s certain songs and BPM’s (Beats Per Measure) that I have to follow for the show to run smoothly. I DJ during the intermissions and play party music so the vibe is right throughout the place.

How long have you been a DJ?

About 10 years now! I was sharing a split level apartment in Lincoln, NE and the gentleman below was moving out. He had a pair of Technics Mk 5s that he needed a safe place to store while he looked for a new place to live. I held onto them for months and during that time, started teaching myself serato scratch live.

What is your personal favorite genre of music?

This is a hard one for me because my favorite genre changes with my mood! If I had to listen to only one genre of music for the rest of my life, I would go with jazz.

How does music make you feel?

Music makes me feel happy, sad, hyped up, nostalgic, warm, cold, up and down. Music is what makes my life easier in so many ways. Whether it is letting out a good cry, working out to some bangers, calming down to some classical; music in general just makes me feel and in a lot of instances helps me process those feelings. One of my favorite things about music is watching people dance to it!

What song instantly livens up a party?

Take It by Dom Dolla

What is the coolest set you’ve ever played?

There are a few, but the best was Saturday in the Park in Sioux City. I played to around 5,000 people on the "Abe Stage" and it was the most fun and the most hyped set I have ever played! Marshall Currin, aka Big Messy, is my best friend and dancer and he joined me that day!

If you could play anywhere, where would it be?

Mi Casa Holiday in Playa del Carmen or Sensation in Europe

Funniest moment you’ve witnessed?

I was playing Saturday in the Park and this older man in only tighty-whities and a cowboy hat was walking around. I brought him on stage and he didn't say a word but the crowd went nuts. It was hilarious and weird all at the same time!

What outfit makes you shine?

Anything with boots! I love stomping around to some tunes!

What makes OFW unmissable?

The designers 100%! I am always in awe of the creativity and time that goes into the outfits and themes. It is incredible!

How do you set the vibe for the pre-party?

I like lots of house music, disco, and dance music that is not too abrasive. I think it is important to curate music for a wide audience for events like this.

Angie Spence | Shop the Runway Sunday DJ

How long have you been a DJ?

I’ve been DJing for four years, raving for 25. That’s actually how I got into DJing. My good friend taught me, I think partially because he was sick and tired of me telling him what songs I wanted him to play!

What is your personal favorite genre of music?

My personal favorite genre of music is House. It fills my soul; it has helped me get through so much in life.

How does music make you feel?

There’s nothing like playing a song and tearing up behind the decks because of the emotions in the track, except for maybe watching others tear up on the dance floor to a track. That’s the most amazing feeling.

What song instantly livens up a party?

While I’m behind the decks, I’m always trying to read the crowd. I play music that not everyone has been exposed to yet. I have to keep that in mind when plying to new audiences. Playing a remix of a popular track will get people moving and allow me to then introduce them to House music and all the feels that go with it. I have a tribal remix of Pump Up The Jam that is always a crowd pleaser!

What is the coolest set you’ve ever played?

Just recently, at MAHA Festival. I played the silent disco, and it was a trip. I didn’t know what to expect but the crowd was so much fun and playing for five hours straight really allows me, as a DJ, to take them on a journey.

If you could play anywhere, where would it be?

I’d want to play a jungle party, like BPM in Costa Rica. I think the vibe would be insane there, and who doesn’t love an outdoor party in the sunshine!

Funniest moment you’ve witnessed?

When I played with Bravo Star, James Kennedy. I didn’t realize that the crowd would be filled with women who were crazy for him. I played the opening set, and as I was finishing up and he took the stage, the crowd went crazy and rushed him, knocking over our decks! We had to scramble to get the equipment back together and continue the show. It was absolutely hilarious…once I got out of the way!

What outfit makes you shine?

I love fashion, I love sequins, I love to stand out.  My favorite outfit that I’ve played in was designed by a previous OFW winner, Indigo Eye Designs. I wore her key piece to OFW F/W ‘19, and it was perfect!

What makes OFW unmissable?

OFW is my absolute favorite event to play. This season will mark my fourth time playing and I’m so excited to be a part of it! Omaha has some phenomenal talent and the crew really knows how to put on a top notch show! Every detail is thought out and every night is stunning!

How do you set the vibe for Shop the Runway Sunday?

I plan on playing some fun disco-house to start. We’ll go from there! Again, reading the room is key; if they want more, I’ve got it!
